# MCP for MSPs: what it is and how to use it

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard for connecting AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT to other software. An MCP server gives the assistant a set of tools it can use, such as “find this client’s open tickets” or “check backup status”, so it can work with live data instead of pasted text.

## What MSPs use it for

- Asking about a client in plain language: open tickets, devices, alerts, backups and licenses in one answer.

- Drafting QBR summaries from real data.

- Running routine checks across every client at once.

## The risks to manage

An AI assistant connected to your tools can see what that connection can see. Three controls matter. The assistant acts with each person’s own permissions. Client data stays scoped to the clients that person is allowed to see. And credentials stay in a vault the AI never reads.

## One connection instead of dozens

Most MSP tools now offer, or are building, their own MCP servers, so a team can end up wiring dozens of separate connections. Control Center MCP is one connection from your team’s Claude or ChatGPT to every client and every tool you run, with the same roles and client scopes as your login.
